Embalming is the largest domain on either section of the National Board Exam — 62 of the 150 scored Sciences items, more than the next two domains combined. If you are triaging study time, this is where it goes.

It is also the domain that punishes memorization hardest. Very few items ask you to recall a definition. Most hand you a case — a jaundiced decedent with ascites, a donor with the long bones recovered, remains held four days before release — and ask what you do first, or which fluid you choose, or why the distribution failed. You have to reason through the case, not recognize a term.

What this domain tests

  • Pre-embalming case analysis: reading the condition of the remains before you commit to a fluid or a site
  • Fluid chemistry — index, primary and secondary dilution, humectants, co-injections, anti-edemics, dyes
  • Dilution math you can be asked to compute, not just describe
  • Vessel selection and multi-point injection, including restricted cervical and sectional work
  • Distribution and diffusion, drainage methods, and diagnosing distribution failure
  • Special cases — jaundice, edema, tissue gas, decomposition, burns, autopsied and donor remains, infants, obesity
  • Cavity treatment, aspiration, purge, and re-aspiration

Work case questions in sets, and force yourself to name the reason before you look. If you cannot say why the answer is right in one sentence, you have recognized a pattern rather than learned the principle — and the exam writes distractors specifically to catch that.
